daisies1 300x297 The 100: FlowersOn our ever-growing list of 100 items that help make a house a home are FLOWERS.  I think they are perhaps the single item that can transform a house into a home.  They’re like the hat on top of Frosty’s head!

“Don’t you think daisies are the friendliest flowers?”
~ You’ve Got Mail, Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan)

No matter the season, flowers make a house bloom into a home. Traditional, mid-century modern, cottage or contemporary -  you can find flowers that complement your house no matter your personal style.

I think we mostly associate flowers with special occasions but in my book, they should be a staple of your decor. I’m hooked on flowers! While fresh is best, that’s probably just not possible on a year-round basis so search for great silks. I look forward to having a cutting garden outside my kitchen so that, at least during the summer, our home can have fresh flowers.  Sigh . . . some day.

Red geraniums,  daisies, sun flowers and hydrangea are among my favorite flowers to have in my house. nightstand hydrangea 224x300 The 100: Flowers These blooms below were clipped from hydrangea right outside the guest room.  I placed this small vase on the nightstand next to my mother-in-laws bed when they came to visit last summer.

I hope this post helps you live a more beautiful life as my friend Melissa likes to celebrates each Friday at The Inspired Room! If you’re hooked on flowers, you may also want to surf on over to Hooked on Houses to see what Miss Julia is hooked on these days!

I love fresh flowers, just wish I could afford them when my garden is on vacation for the winter. Can’t wait for my tulips to come out, how many more weeks?….
Thanks for sharing,
Suzy

Me too, Suzy. It will be April before I have tulips. We planted about 120 last fall and I really hope they’ll all bloom this year. I have far too few flowers in my gardens to have fresh ones in the house all year long . . . that probably explains my growing collection of silk ones! Thanks for visiting.

I often say a bouqet of daisies can make even the worst day great!

Amen sister! I know not all women love flowers (a fact that I just CAN’T understand) but I absolutely LOVE them. I can’t tell you how happy it would make me if my husband came home one day with flowers for me – for no reason. They just make me happy and daisies? They are such a happy and friendly flower. Thanks for visiting!

I also loves flowers. I also have some house plants that bloom throughout the winter months that keep the outdoors in. Orchids surprisingly enough are very easy to take care of and when they blossom it lasts a long long while – if left on the plant. African Violets are another and reward you with very lovely blooms. Carnations are some cut flowers that can last a long long while if the water is changed, etc. If you can keep herbs during the winter, rosemary is a fun plant to keep by the kitchen window. Not only does it smell wonderful you can also “trim” it for your pork roast and baked potatoes. I even brought in some scented geraniums for the winter. All you have to do with them is rub against the leaves to be rewarded with lovely whiffs of fragrance. In the summer when they grow to be a good size outside, make jelly from an infusion of the leaves of rose scented varieties. Mmmmm good. Thanks Diana, I look forward to your weekly visits.

Those are great suggestions Nancy! The scent of fresh rosemary is amazing. One of my favorite scents. I have never had good luck with herbs in the winter. I hope that the new window we put in the kitchen will allow me to grow herbs. The window will have two shelves across it – perfect for herbs I hope!
