My Southern Kitchen

by Diana @ The Devine Home on August 10, 2009

Welcome to y’all visiting from  Melissa’s Beautiful Life Friday at The Inspired Room & Julia’s “Hooked On” Friday party.  Thanks for stopping! Please don’t be shy – your comments make my day. Have a great weekend!

A SOUTHERN KITCHEN – that’s what I wanted.

Since love has me tethered to the North Coast here on the shores of Lake Erie, I have decided to make our Cape Cod “Cottage in the Woods” my southern retreat.

We moved here two years ago this month and have been transforming the house one room at a time as budget will allow. That’s a hard way to go because you know as one room gets a face lift it makes the rest of the house look that much worse.

In April, we completed most of the work on the kitchen. There are still a few tweaks here and there and it can take time finding just the perfect accessories but it’s getting there.

This is “Phase I” of the kitchen remodel. The goal was to take our dated, dysfunctional kitchen and transform it into a classic, timeless, southern kitchen. (Phase II will be to convert the screened porch off the kitchen into a dining room. I’m hoping we can  to do that this winter.)  Here are the before and afters from Phase I.

Before: August 2007Cassie Kitchen Before 1
I know. Can you say d-a-t-e-d?  There is no mystery as to why this house sat on the market for almost a year before we came along and snatched her up. . . The kitchen tells you all you need to know about the rest of the house! But I could just see the potential under all that pink and blue wallpaper. ;o)

 After: August 2009
new kitchen AFTER LR & fireplace shotThe Major Changes:

1. As soon as I saw the kitchen I knew that the island was positioned incorrectly. It needed to be re-oriented to run the length of the room to open up  the workspace.

2. We had never used the table we put  in the bay window “eat-in” area at the back of the kitchen. I thought it would be the perfect place for a fireplace and a couple of large chairs.

We moved the large picture window into onto the hallway wall (I crave lots of light!)  We repositioned the two small existing windows to make room for the gas fireplace.

Since my days in San Diego I had wanted a fireplace in the kitchen after seeing one at a house that a friend was renting. new kitchen fire place island closeupI knew it would be a good investment – here on the North Coast we fired it up this week on cool August morning (how depressing!) I selected this arched fireplace from Heat & Glo because it reinforced the curved shape I was using as a design element throughout the kitchen.

We all know that the kitchen is THE room in your house where everyone wants to be. It’s the new living room! I wanted to make sure I had room on either side of the fireplace for nice comfy chairs – the perfect place for friends to sit and visit or to relax with a cup of coffee catching up on the morning news.

Cassie Kitchen Ovens and Island beforeAs you can see in this second photo, there was a lot of wasted space  in the kitchen and I hated having to go around the island to get to the fridge (not in the picture but it was just beyond the right edge of the photo and we kept it there in the remodel.) We fixed all that in the remodel!

new kitchen from island to sink viewI am not a fan of the long, flat kitchen island (they remind me of airport runways) and I don’t like the raised bar with stools either so I designed this raised middle section  as my alternative.   Because you see the entire front of the island when you walk in from the living room the island’s “cubbies” are both decorative and functional and the raised area hides a multitude of messes! ;o)

Another big problem in this kitchen was counter space – every counter was chopped up by either the stove top or the sink. The little bit of counter to the left of the wall oven was where we kept the coffee maker and a few cookbooks and it just wasn’t nearly large enough to be able to use it as a work space.

In the new kitchen we solved this problem. I have 8 feet of uninterrupted counter on the island and I love it! (True story: when my nieces and nephews from Georgia came to visit us, 5-year-old Maddie said of the marble countertop, “Oh, this would be great to lay on naked!)

The contractors asked if I didn’t want to reconsider and have a sink in the island. It was not up for negotiation. I love having this space for prep work:  it’s 2-foot deep x 8-foot long. Making  a salad is easy now that I have room for veggies, cutting board and bowl.  I have a pull-out trash bin right there as well. Part of what makes a well-designed kitchen is knowing what YOU need.

We closed up the entrance into the dining room from the kitchen and made a peek-a-boo window above the sink. I would have liked to have had a bigger window but I wanted space for one set of upper cabinets.

You see that I resisted the stainless steel appliance trend. It always comes down to personal choice and I am not a fan of stainless which has kind of been the “it girl” in kitchen design. Instead, I went with classic white which just seemed to be the best choice to create the feel I wanted in this kitchen. We have a 36″ 5-gas burner, 3-electric oven Aga range, an American Standard wall mount sink, and an LG french door fridge. The range is a showpiece that everyone comments on – I love having three ovens in one tight 36″ package.

new kitchen sink closeupSomething I knew didn’t need was an under-sink cabinet. Instead, I wanted to skirt that area to bring a bit of softness, color and pattern to break up the cabinets and dish washer. The wall color is HC-3 Greenmont Silk from Benjamin Moore.

Between this area and the workspace I have seven toe-kick storage drawers. Since I’m just 5′2″ it’s hard for me to reach beyond the first shelf of the top cabinets, so I limited the amount of upper cabinets we had and use the drawers and toe kicks for dishes and platters.

new kitchen from oven to fireplace viewBefore we remodeled there had been no room for the microwave, so it sat on a shelf  the right on the bay window in the “desk” area. Now it’s in the island along with a shelf lift for my heavy food processor.

When we first moved into the house I had a local builder I work with create a virtual remodel with the ideas I had at the time for the space. He thought I was a bit nuts to reorient the island but he loved the idea of the fireplace in the bay window. Once he completed the computer redesign and played with relocating appliances, he “saw” my vision! His plans gave me a good idea of how to rework the space but I tweaked them along the way and made pencil to paper changes over the past year.

So when we were ready to get moving on things, I asked the talented Layla Palmer of The Lettered Cottage to create a final virtual kitchen for me to show my husband {he couldn’t see my vision}, the contractor and the cabinet makers {the ones the contractor had done earlier did not have the correct colors for cabinets, walls, etc.} Check out the link above to see her virtual design of the space.

Layla was teriffic to work with. She gave me an option or two of some layouts that I had not thought of but in the end, all the pieces and parts ended up pretty much where they had been on the first virtual design I had done {except we got that sink off the island :) } You’ll notice changes from her designs to the final result {especially in the island design and butcher block counter top finish} but the virtual designs were so helpful in communicating my overall vision to everyone who was working on the project. It helped make things go much more smoothly because they “got” what I wanted to do! If you have a big project like this, I would sooo recommend having a virtual design done.

We love our new kitchen and look forward to Phase II this winter (finger’s crossed!)

My friend Paula suggested I post my pics on HGTV’s Rate My Space. Want to rate my space? Just click here. Hope you’ll give me 5 stars ;)

Oh my gosh it’s GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!! Do you have a separate eating area then? I love, love, love it. The fireplace is the best!!!

3 Diana @ The Devine Home 08.10.09 at 4:01 pm

Lil Momma,

Thank you sweetie!

Yes, we do have a separate eating area. The window above the sink looks into what is now our dining room. Of course, most of the time we sit at the end of the island, down near the fireplace and eat there while watching TV. Funny, we never used to eat in the kitchen when we had the eat-in breakfast nook.

Phase II will be to make the screened porch into the new dining room. While you don’t see the porch in any of the photos, it would be to your right as you walk into the first photo I posted. We plan on taking out the sliding glass door and making the opening bigger so there’s nice flow from the kitchen into the new DR. I will have a big pantry in that room (I just could not fit it into this kitchen). I’m really hoping the $$ works out so we can do it this winter.

Once we make the screened porch into the new dining room, we plan on turning the current dining room space into a “music conservatory” for my husbands 4,000 CDs that he has no where to put!

When you have a house, you have a project!

Oh my gosh! Breathtaking doesn’t even feel like a strong enough word!!
I love everything about it. The cozy chairs and fireplace are amazing. Something that I would love to have if our home was larger.
Just beautiful! I would never want to leave this room. (Psst… did you try out the marble?!) ;)

Oh my goodness! I have no words other than AMAZING! It’s so beautiful! You did such a great job! Plus, I’m 5′2″ and the toe kick drawers are the greatest idea! Thanks for sharing! :)

6 Diana @ The Devine Home 08.11.09 at 3:04 pm

Miss Caron: Aren’t you so sweet? Thank you! We do love the new kitchen – and I gotta say the toe-kick drawers are such a life saver when you are, ummm, vertically challenged like I am!

Tricia: The chairs are super cozy. I had my husband sit in one to make sure he liked it before we bought them. RE: the marble – you are a b-a-d girl! ;)

7 Pam @ This Humble House 08.12.09 at 2:31 pm

Wow. I just can’t find the words! I LOVE the fireplace you added! I LOVE white kitchens, too! Absolutely beautiful!!!

8 Rhoda @ Southern Hospitality 08.12.09 at 4:01 pm

WOW, that is totally gorgeous, I know you must be thrilled. I just love your new light fixtures too, those really stand out in the pics. Layla is one talented girl (and a friend of mine) and I had totally forgotten about your consultation that she did, even though I know I saw it way back when. The finished kitchen is just spectacular, truly to die for!

9 Christi {Jealous Hands} 08.13.09 at 3:44 pm

Just gorgeous!! I especially love the seating area & fireplace in the kitchen. My mother-in-love has a brick (woodburning) fireplace in her kitchen, & I’ve coveted it ever since she moved into her house.

Alas, no hope of a fireplace in my kitchen – I’ll just live through hers & yours!

10 kariandkijsa 08.13.09 at 10:10 pm

What a truly, truly incredible job! Those light fixtures are so fabulous…where did they come from? That fireplace is so wonderful. Everything is perfect!

Thanks and have a blessed day!

I love the fireplace and the island. How unusual but so totally awesome!
The white appliances make sense here…completely.

Oh my! What a treat for the eyes this morning. Came here via Melissa’s Beautiful Life Friday post and am so glad I did! Wow, wow, wow! Lovin’ it all! Congrats on this amazing transformation!

15 Astrid 08.14.09 at 7:18 am

Wow! Your kitchen is definitely a show stopper! Nicer than any I’ve seen in decorating magazines! I have to check out those toe kick drawers. Smart idea.

16 Rita 08.14.09 at 7:35 am

LOVE it!!! So beautiful! I was wondering where did you get your lighting from?

17 Diana @ The Devine Home 08.14.09 at 7:58 am

Hi Rita,

The light fixtures WERE a challenge – I looked at more than 400 before finding these! We bought them online from Lighting By Lux in Georgia. #2334-47 Manhattan 4 Light Iron Pendant from World Imports. Here is the link: http://www.lightingbylux.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=2334-47

We worked with Bryan who was great.

18 Terry 08.14.09 at 9:20 am

Finally another non-stainless person. Finally. What a kitchen! Thanks for giving us a look.

19 Flower Patch Farmgirl 08.14.09 at 10:03 am

Flawless! I can’t imagine what is left to do in Phase 2? I love your light fixtures – so unique and commanding! And thank you for resisting the stainless steel trend. :)

Diana,
Your kitchen is to die for, so warm and inviting! I linked to your post through The Nester & I was tickled to find that you are a Northeast Ohioan, as am I, although you are an “eastsider” and I was born & raised a “westsider”. (side note: I just blogged the other day about the 2009 Dream House – which room did you decorate in the 2007 model?)

I am truly touched by your tagline, “Creating the home you want, within the house you have”. I am currently in a new builder spec. home & while my first choice would have been a 120 yr. old farmhouse, I am truly blessed to be where I am, and I’m having a great time turning this house into our home.
Thanks for the inspiration!

21 Erin 08.14.09 at 11:40 am

It is hard to believe that it is the same space! It looks so lovely and sophisticated now, but it is still homey, the place where you could make gourmet comfort food! Kick toe drawers are absolutely genius – I love that idea.

Have a great weekend!

22 pk 08.14.09 at 2:09 pm

This is stunning! You did a wonderful job. Love it.

23 Diana @ The Devine Home 08.14.09 at 2:25 pm

Hey Stephanie,

So glad another North Coaster is stopping by! 2007 was the first year that I worked on the dream house (I moved here in 2005 but they have a full complement of designers. It wasn’t until 2007 that I could interview to be considered). As a “newbie” I got the laundry room and the foyer. I’ll have to post some pics from my past Dream Houses. Looking forward to visiting you.

24 Diana @ The Devine Home 08.14.09 at 2:25 pm

Yes Terry, we “just say no to stainless” are few and far in between ;o)

25 Aisling 08.14.09 at 3:36 pm

Wow! What a transformation! Someday, I will create my dream kitchen within my existing house. It is only 13 years old, but we had to go pretty basic with everything when we built (to save money.)

There is a lot of inspiration to take away from what you shared! So glad I came by from my first “Beautiful Life Friday” post. :)

26 Deb Doss 08.14.09 at 3:53 pm

ABSOLUTLY STUNNING !!! True Country Cozy all the way ,my dream kitchen could never top this !!!

I found this glorious post from the Nester’s Nest Files, and since it is my 6th or 7th time gazing at your kitchen in only a few days, I thought it would be right to leave you a comment. I have sent this link to friends and hubby, and you have started me dreaming. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, gorgeous. The fireplace makes me imagine a Mediterranean villa, and the island? Oh, forget about it.

Love what you have done.
a new friend~

Katherine,

Thanks so much – I very much your comments and every one who has taken time to say hello. You are so sweet! I have had well over 1000 unique visitors at this post yet less than 30 comments. Amazing. I just love all the inspiration we can find on the web. Life needs a little frosting — blogs make good frosting ;o)

31 Kristen ~ The Pajama Mama 08.19.09 at 2:33 pm

Wow, a fireplace in the kitchen-so cozy & beautiful! I love finding ideas like that one that stick with you until you can do something like that. I have a simple awning in my kitchen that I envisioned in my head for years before we were even in this house!

32 Carrie 08.24.09 at 4:36 pm

You really had an awesome vision for your design. Who would’ve thought such a dated room could get a redo that is so timeless and elegant! The potential a standard room has…inspiring!
