Little For So Little Time

by Diana @ The Devine Home on January 17, 2010

I know on this blog I focus on ideas and ways to create the home we want within the house we have but . . . every now and again it’s probably a good thing to remind us all of what we already know: it’s not the house or things that make a home; it is the people we love – not the things we have. That’s what we should cherish.

Tonight I was folding laundry – miniature mittens, tiny boxers shorts, munchkin sweaters. My nieces and nephews are visiting from Georgia, here to enjoy our snow. They range in age from 5 to soon-to-be-10.

As I stood folding their laundry, I was overwhelmed with the thought of how quickly time passes. They are little for so little time. It made me sad and even now I’m tearing up just thinking about how time is a thief.

Since their arrival late this past week, we’ve been having so much fun sledding, playing board games and spending time all together. It might not seem like anything special but I hope the memories we’re making will some day be cherished treasures. Soon enough they won’t be so eager to spend time with their DeeDee. They’ll have boy/girl friends, jobs, sports and other interests.

I’m taking snapshots in my mind of the little moments . . . like watching my husband as he holds Maddie’s hand while she twirls round and round giggling all the while.

It all brings to mind a verse from the Bible: “. . . For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” {James 4:14} Life is but a vapor – like my warm breath against the cold winter window pane. It appears for a little while and then vanishes away.

They are little for so little time. I’m trying to make these little moments count.
