Layering Season

pine conesThe middle of January is the “blah” season of decorating.

The Christmas holidays are over and spring is weeks and weeks away. We’re between the twix and the twain when it comes to decorating.

This transitional time is “layering season” when it comes to decorating our homes.  Just like we layer our clothes for the cold weather, inside our homes we should think about layers of decorations.

An area rug on top of your wall-to-wall carpet is the perfect example of layering. Last week I had a staging appointment where we moved an area rug that was covering a beautiful wood floor and placed it on top of their off white carpet in the living room to help define a smaller conversational area within the larger room.

The husband was very surprised that I was putting a rug on top of the carpet and said he “would never have thought of that.” It was amazing how the little change made such a big difference.

The photo above shows another simple layering trick – on top of the wicker chest they placed a folded throw blanket and on top of that a platter has been topped with pinecones. It makes for such a cozy look and feel in a winter house.

Most of us have great stuff we can use during this transitional decorating season – baskets of pinecones, nubbing thows, baskets of yarn, snow flake decor, ice skates, mittens, skis, etc. they are all perfect for winter decorating.

Hi Diana! Just wanted you to know that I was checking my daughter’s blog out today and found your response to her question about being domestic. As a MOM I cannot thank you enough for the stand you took. Young women today have so much “trash” shoved into their head about what is right and wrong for women. So few women can actually stand up and be truthful in what God tells us to do as women through His Word! Thank you for taking the time to help guide young women through your views!

PS ~ And you know I love, love, love your blog!
