Kids Custom Pinboard

by Diana @ The Devine Home on July 19, 2009

In my day we used to call them corkboards – in today’s design lingo they are called pinboards. At stores like Pottery Barn Kids, these pinboards can easily cost more than $100! Where I come from, that’s a lot of money and, IMO, it’s ridiculous to spend that kind of money on what is essentially a fabric covered cork board.

So when the kids wanted custom pinboards for their rooms, we transformed garage sale corkboards we found for .50 cents or $1.00 into custom-made pinboards. The cost was about $6.00 – now THAT I can do. Beyond the money-saving factor was the fun factor and the true personalization factor.

It was a hands-on project for everyone. Step one was having the kids paint the frames. Because we were covering thecarson-painting-dog-board cork with fabric, we didn’t have to worry about them getting paint on the cork. What a perfect summer project! Here’s Carson painting his frame. All the kids had a really good time painting their boards. They had a sense of pride in creating something very special for their rooms.

Once the paint had dried, we hot glued fabric to the cork. Carson loves dogs, so it was easy to select fabric at Wal-Mart for him. His mom worked on his board and it turned out great!dog-board-finished

We will hang each of the custom pinboards above the kids’ desks. It will be the perfect place for them to keep track of everything from projects to princess things to Pokemon cards!

You saw the pinboard we made for Maddie on our last post. Here’s a close up of her sparkly butterfly pinboard. maddie-pinboardShe loved all the colorful butterflies and the sparkles!

These were such a fun project to do with the kids for their rooms. By making our own, we were able to showcase the kids interests and to truly make them a special part of their rooms. SO much better than buying the expensive ones and a fun way to create some summer memories . . . how devine!

When I asked him what his favorite thing in the room was…he replied,…
” the DOG corkboard” ……NOW granted his room isn’t finished but that made this mama feel pretty good.

I’m completing this project today. I picked up an old corkboard at a thrift store for $2, spray painted the wood black (96 cents @walmart), and decoupaged some fab wrapping paper over the cork. It’s going to be my project/idea board in my craft room/closet.
Thank you for the inspiration.
