Hall(way) of Family

hallway final makeover1 300x225 Hall(way) of FamilyIf you’ll be doing any spring cleaning in the upcoming weeks, here’s a neat idea for what to do with your “homeless” photos and pictures you find tucked in drawers, baskets and boxes:  create a “Hall of Family”.

We’re used to athletes being inducted into a hall of fame but most of us will never be so enshrined. However, in our own homes we can carve out a space to celebrate those we love.

Here at our Cottage in the Woods, I’m transforming a utilitarian hallway into a showcase for family photos and small momentos.  A hallway or pass through is the perfect place to create your own hall of family. It’s great space so why not squeeze a little personality into otherwise forgetable real estate?

In our house, we’ve installed a board and batten wall treatment and I’m sitting photos on the ledge. However, you could easily create artful arrangements to create photo collages on the walls.

We added some architectural detail to our boring hallway by doing a “board and batten” treatment on the walls (check it out here). While we still have the crown molding/rope lighting along the ceiling to finish (hopefully within the next week or so), I wanted to show you the photo treatment that is now dressing up one section of the new board and batten walls!

I bought all the black floating frames that my local Wal-Mart had in stock (I’m waiting for them to get more so I can get my candid photos framed and up!) hallway final carson grouping 300x225 Hall(way) of FamilyI’m so excited about the way this section of my “hall of family” has turned out! Between the two photo groupings I put a 10 x 13 floating frame and just printed out a quote from Laura Ingalls Wilder (which reads “It is the sweet, simple things in life that matter.”)  Below is a closeup of the quote and a starfish which I bought last week at TJ Maxx - just $7.99!

Got a boring hallway that needs a little pizaazz? Enshire those you love in your own Hall of Family!

While you’re at it, make sure to visit The Inspired Room for great ideas on capturing moments in our hearts, mind’s eye and in photos so that we can cherish them for a lifetime.

Thanks for stopping in at the cafe!
I love the floating frames. We have a family hall of fame too~ I used heavier frames up the staircase. I smile every time I glance that way.
come on by for a glass of sweet tea whenever you want!

I have just such a wall in my home. It is covered with all sizes of black and white photos of our heritage, framed in black frames that I picked up here and there on specials. It is a wall that always gets so much attention when we have guests!

hi! your website is cute and inspiring. i stumbled upon it after googling “floating frames”. i have had a desire to do an art project in my toddler’s room using them. just went to hobby lobby…they had the nicer ones with wood frames and all glass…and then some that were framed in plastic that seperates into 4 pieces when you dismantal to put the photo in. now that i have gotten home i cannot decide if they are cheap looking…
i have a question for you…are yours the plasticy kind? i would love to know because i think yours look amazing…very classy and nice. if you are able to write me, i would love it.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Ashley,

So glad you found The Devine Home! My floating frames are just the cheap ones from Wal-Mart where the sides pull off and the back is plastic. I did get a couple of the nicer wood ones but honestly, I don’t like them as much (at least for this application).
