Every financial advisor I have discussed this with always say the same thing. Take the house. If you are married currently the captial gains taxes if $500,000 - so they have said if you can make the house your primary residence for two years you can sell the house and pay no capital gains taxes. Of course, you do have taxes on winning the house (local, state and fed) and you will have property taxes to be paid. Again, the financial people I have talked to have said to use the instant equity in the house to pay these taxes. The woman who won the house two years ago decided to take the house based on the advise they were given. Last year's winner actually bought her tickets with a pool of work friends so they took the money.
