Friday was Dream House Day – the first committee meeting of our “Dream Team” where the design theme for this year’s house would be revealed and where we would find out what room we’d be decorating.
As you know from my previous DH post, I was hoping for a kids bedroom and that’s exactly what I got! I have bedroom #4 which is marked as “Boys Bedroom” on the blueprints. The dimensions are approximately 10′-8″ x 16′-3″ with a pitched ceiling and one window (3′-8″ x 5′-0″) that’s offset on a side wall on the back third of the room.
Now, this does not mean I can run wild with any old idea that pops into my creative mind: N-O. The way the process works is we have a theme and part of that includes a “backgrounder” on our Dream Home Family. When you are designing a space, you want it to reflect those who live there. That’s difficult to do when you are building a home to give away (and not for an actual client). So, the lead designer (returning from last year, the talented Beverly Noble) provides a background of an imaginary “client”. The “boy” in my imaginary family, it turns out, is actually a freshman in college.
It’s a great assignment which will challenge me creatively if I want the room to be memorable and stand out in a house of “fabulousness”! Generally speaking, kids bedrooms best lend themselves to “theming” for ages newborn to about age 12. After that? Well, not so much.
The phrase that comes to my mind for this year’s house is “rustic elegance”. Beverly clipped pages from magazines to give us a visual idea about the look and feel she wants in the home. It’s kind of an upscale Montana ranch house: rough hewn beams, wonderful textures, and colors from the earth. The color palette Beverly selected for us to work within ranges from a lovely dusty copper and daring red (which bring to my mind the color of a sunset) to shades of taupe, a deep blue and limey green.
So, there you have it. My 2009 Dream Home Assignment – the Freshman’s Room.
Over the next several months, I’ll bring you updates and progress on my Dream House project. In the mean time – it’s your turn to play Dream House designer. If my assignment was YOUR assignment how would you proceed? Keep in mind all the information I’ve given you. I have my design inspiration for the room already . . . it’s something that I won’t share now but if my idea is approved (we have to submit preliminary plans to the lead designer and YMCA DH Chair Peggy Swanger for the green light) IT WILL make the room memorable.

Not quite sure?? When I think of a freshmen I don’t exactly think twin bed and 12 year old?? I would want to give it enough of an adult look with out making it to MASTER looking??? A big challenge I think… I willl look forward to your design ideas..not an easy one.
Being the mom of boys and a high school senior (and soon to be college freshman) — I think something high tech/modern with flat screen TV and electronic gadgets. Something that definitely looks grown up/bachelor pad-ish.
Thanks for the input. That’s exactly what I’m planning. I’m appreciate the ideas and confirmation. I have my prelim. meeting this Friday!
