As spring finally arrives in most all parts of the country, we move from a black and white world to one that’s ablaze in Technicolor! Wonderful fushia, yellow, orange and green - it’s amazing how quickly color takes over.
I find that to be the case in our homes as well. So many people live in boring beige when we have 16 million colors that can help us tell our stories in our homes.
One of my clients loves fun colors. When I came to her house for our Initial Design Consultation she opened a kitchen cabinet and showed me her Fiestaware and said, “This is my personality”. I was shocked because her house was all beige – nothing like the fun colors of her dishes. My goal was to find places in her home where we could make it feel like HER home and not this beige boring box.
We started with her master bedroom. This is a ”closed door” space that doesn’t have to flow with the rest of the house. Here’s what we started with:
My client is a very vibrant person and she wanted her bedroom to reflect this. The bedroom is on a shady side of the house so the beige on the walls made the room feel very depressing.
Our inspiration was some bedding she loved – it was orange and red! How fun is that??
Because she will be moving in the next 5-7 years, we didn’t want to create a room that she would have to completely redo when she moved, so here was our solution:
We painted all the walls WHITE which really helped to wipe out the depressed feeling the beige created. We installed crown molding on all the walls and applied a “board and batten” look to the focal wall which the bed was placed against. These treatments introduced a sense of architecture where there had been none before.
Our pop of orange came along the top 18″ of the wall. The guys at my Benjamin Moore store said they had NEVER mixed up this orange since owning the store. It’s eye popping but used in just one area, it does not overwhelm the room.
We peppered the room with other red and orange accessories to create balance. Here you see a faux orchid on the dresser along with some red and orange glass vases I clustered. On her nightstand (not shown) I bought a small orange Fiestaware dipping bowl for my client to put her rings and ear rings in.
My client loves the way this room turns out – it inspires her to keep it looking neat and to make the bed each day so she can enjoy the room. How “devine!”
