Maddie is five years old going on 25.
She has a mind of her own and knew exactly what she wanted her room to be like {“gurly” – you know green, pink, yellow, blue, purple with butterflies.}
Below is a photo of what the room looked like when we started. The
family moved into their new house just a few weeks ago and the kid’s rooms are at the top of the list.
During Maddie’s design consultation I had her go through a kids catalog and point out what she liked and thought she wanted. Even though she’s only five, she very carefully looked through each page and pointed out details she liked (like hooks hung low on the wall so she could reach them!)
We really only needed to paint walls and add some new window treatments and accessories. Maddie was more than happy to pitch in to help transform her room. She is an excellent helper!
We are on a tight budget for all the kids rooms. Here’s a breakdown on the items we bought for Maddie’s room:
I found the adorable wall flowers I used on either side of her bed at IKEA – they were just $9.99 each! That’s also where I found the coordinating lamp for her desk ($6.99), bed canopy ($19.99) & the desk chair ($17.99).
The window valances were on clearance at Target for $12.96 each and I found the rods with swirly purple glass finials at Wal-Mart for
$9.99 each.
The “M” wall initial was at TJ Maxx for $6.99 along with the polka dot sheets for $16.99. The butterfly wall sticker were $14.95 at Target. All the rest we had.

We worked late into the night and Maddie woke up to discover her “new” room – she loved it!
I think she especially loves her “dress up” corner where we placed her special things that she got on our spring trip to Disney @ the Bippity Boppity Boutique.

I used the wall flower lights on either side of the bed because at five, Maddie really doesn’t need a bedside table. The wall lights make a perfect night light and they are a nice alternative to night stand and lamp.
We created our own designer cork boards by painting the trim and covering the cork with fabric that we hot glued around the edges. Maddie loved the sparkly butterflies.
Although it’s not pictured, we used the existing toy chest at the foot of her bed. We covered a pillow with left over cork board fabric and it became the perfect place for all her “family” of webkniz. Truly that was Maddie’s favorite thing in the room. A special place for family. . . how devine!
