2013 Word of the Year

This year, instead of making any New Year’s Resolutions, I decided to choose a “Word of the Year”. I have seen this concept on several blogs that I visit and it seems like a nice alternative.

A few words came to mind and I actually thought I had settled on the word I was going to use, however, at the last minute I changed my mind. So I’m making it official and publishing it!

My 2013 Word of the Year is:

transform 2013 Word of the Year

The word transform is defined as: trans·form  \tran(t)s-ˈfȯrm\  a : to change in composition or structure b : to change the outward form or appearance of c : to change in character or condition

“Transform” . . . it’s filled with hope and change {oh no, I’m sounding like Bill Clinton, LOL!} It’s a positive word that inspires me. I also like that there are various forms of the word: transformation, transformed, transforming, etc. As a verb there are lots of options making this word transform-able! LOL.

I also like how my word of the year applies to my life both on a professional and personal level. My design work is all about helping my clients transform – change the outward appearance – of their homes.

This year, I am looking forward to the transformation that I am planning for my business website (devinedesignshome.com) and this blog! I have had a new business logo designed for my business and we’ll be making changes to incorporate that new logo.

Personally, in 2013 I want to focus on transforming several areas of my life. It’s not that anything is horribly bad, it’s just that they can always be better. Oh, and I am seriously looking forward to transforming our master bedroom this year! That is our big project for 2013.

For me, it’s important to anchor this decision in a Bible verse on which I will focus, meditate and memorize. The perfect {and yes, obvious} verse is Romans 12:2 which reads in the King James Bible as:

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

The Greek word used in the Bible for the word transformed is ”METAMORPHOO” and is the same word that we get our word “metamorphosis” from. It is describing a complete change, like that of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly. So I thought the butterfly would be a perfect mascot, so to speak, for my word of the year.

I’m super-excited about having a word of the year on which to focus. New Year’s resolutions don’t seem to hold much sway in terms of being effective, so why not try something new?

When I was much younger and in college, I remember that I had very specific goals that I had printed out and taped on the side of my nightstand. I saw them every day and they gave me a vision for my future.

Now, as I’m in my 40′s and approaching the BIG 5-0, I’ve had less focus on my future. Life is about making the day-to-day the best it can be. . . and I’m looking forward to doing that in 2013!

So . . .  I am a bit curious about YOU . . . have you done any resolutions this year? A word of the year? What are your thoughts about this kind of thing? Do you think goals are still helpful for you as we get beyond our 20s?
